Posted March 29, 2006 -- The Lucky Fucks out of Midland Beach play at Dock Street Bar & Grill this Friday. The band name should be your first indication of where these guys stand on the ready-to-sell-out-to-MTV scale. Still, for fans of original hardcore punk (read: the Exploited, Subhumans on the UK side, Minor Threat and the Bad Brains on the U.S. side), these are the kids who will make you want to go and cut your hair into a mohawk again. I took in a show three weeks back and the band flat-out rocked in a fashion not seen by these aging eyes in quite some time. My favorite memory: Watching two girls in mini skirts flatback a Monsignor Farrell football player in the pit. Good clean fun, in other words. The Lucky Fucks are from what I like to call the "Irish knucklehead" school of post-punk, following in the footsteps of NYC hardcore titans Murphy's Law and Boston's Dropkick Murphys, etc. They played at Dock Street two Saturdays ago, but I took a pass, figuring they'd be too hungover from the previous night's festivities. Now's the time to catch them on their A game. A don't miss if you like your music loud-n-fast. After you've taken in the show, be sure to answer the How Staten Island Scene are you? online survey. I scored a 9 percent, and I didn't even understand half the questions. -- Red Rogue, a "foot stompin', folk rock" quintent from Wagner College come down the hill to play at EveryThing Goes Friday night (8 p.m). On Saturday (8 p.m.) it's the Crossfire Guitar Ensemble. -- Caroline Cutroneo and Friends play at the Muddy Cup Friday night -- The orchestra and choir of the Holt and Ranelagh Schools (Wokingham, England, and Bracknell, England, respectively) launch their 2006 U.S. tour this Sunday with a performance at St. Paul's Memorial Church (225 St. Paul's Ave.). They will be performing a variety of works ranging from Handel to the Beatles. Proceeds of the concert will benefit the Campaign to Save the Historic Buildings of St. Paul's. Time: 3 p.m. Suggested donation: $20.00. Full tea provided. Call (718) 273-9572 for more info. -- And, of course, how can I forget Stapleton Houses/Wu Tang alumnus Dennis Coles, aka Tony Starks aka Ghostface Killah? Ghostface's newest album Fishscale just hit record stores yesterday. Judging by advance record reviews, it's the one thing keeping New York City music critics from jumping in front of the G train this spring. I've only heard a few snatches but was blown away enough by last year's "Run" single to go out and buy the CD sight unseen (or sound unheard). If you prefer to try before you buy, there are a couple free downloads and an audio interview on the official myspace page. OFF ISLAND -- St. George's own Tatfoo Tan will be the featured artist in a month long solo exhibition at Paul Sharpe Contemporary Art (525 W. 29th St.) in Chelsea. The kickoff reception will be on Thursday, April 6, from 6-9 p.m. Posted March 7, 2006 -- Bob Kaiser and Friends, featuring Don Hahn on trumpet, Kris Kaiser on guitar, and Steve Ascolese on bass, Jerold Kavanagh on drums and special guest guitarist Marc Sica play Karl's Clipper (40 Bay St.) this Saturday. Show starts at 7:30. Call (718) 720-4442 --Musical Chairs Chamber Ensemble, the resident ensemble of the Staten Island Museum, will be performing Saturday night, March 18th. Then he will shift over to the literature portion of the routine, reading slections from his own folktale collection "Handfuls of Air." Then it's into the home stretch with a collection of Russian, Mexican, Scottish and folk music. The show starts at 8 p.m. Gold will be the guy warming up in the back who smells like Tiger Balm. -- Jeremy Elijah, Monty Love Solo, and Jazz Funeral play the Muddy Cup Friday night. Show starts at 8 p.m. also. March 2, 2006 -- Danny-O's, the dive bar on Hyatt Street just up from Borough Hall was advertising a hipster DJ of some sort when I walked past today. I have nothing against hipsters personally, but I had this bright idea where, instead of writing down the info on the flyer, I'd simply take a digital picture of it. Unfortunately, the resulting photo cropped out the DJ's name. I know the time: 9:30 and the date: Thursday, March 2nd. Other tidbits: the DJ as "from Manhattan" and boasts "the hottest music in town." I'm dubious, but a couple reviews of Danny-O's have me intrigued. -- SADD, Students Against Destructive Decisions, presents a six act lineup, including Julius C and Nothing Seems to Last at the Dock Street Bar & Grill Friday.
