March 31, 2006 [2:35 p.m.] Looks like the recent heat surrounding the Senate immigration bill has reached Staten Island. Sam Williams offers a little late afternoon musing on the topic, taking advantage of some loaned news photos from the La Habra Journal (La Habra, Calif.).

March 29, 2006 [4:15 p.m.] Cat people feed scaly fish to seals bathing and reading in heavy harbor traffic.

March 27, 2006 [11:45 a.m.] OK, we're not sure if this yet another sign of the End Times or just a case of some Chinese textile designer sending a shout out to his Bay Ridge relatives, but Urban Outfitters is selling a version of its "Love Nico" t-shirt that contains an eerily familiar suspension bridge. Price: $32. Our question: Do Staten Island EZ Pass holders get a half-price discount? -- Thanks to J.M. for the heads up.

March 25, 2006 [2:25 p.m.] Mona Le Roy recently visited Serpentine Commons and experienced what it was like to be queen of the hill.

March 24, 2006 [7:50 a.m.] In Alaska, they take photos of grizzly bears and whales. In Los Angeles, it's celebrities and 1950s architecture. Here in Stapleton, the local topic of photographic fascination is vehicular mayhem.

March 22, 2006 [11:50 a.m.]This week's meet your neighbor: Wildlife Magic owner Allen Palazzo talks about taxidermy, his passion for bow hunting, and what happens when you pull a dead bear out of your trunk on Broad SQtreet in broad daylight. [12:10 p.m.] Plus a SCARS page update.

Today's addition is a traffic two-fer. First, we'd like to introduce the new SCARS page. It's an accident and enforcement tracking service offered courtesy of the Stapleton Coalition Against Reckless Speeders. Then, in our latest edition of the meet your neighbor series, we offer an extended up close and personal interview with Stapleton resident Domenick Frascello. Domenick is a local fixture instantly recognizable to any north shore person who has spent a moment stuck at the corner of Van Duzer and Wright Street or other high volume spots around the neighborhood. He's a quiet guy who, apart from the occasional colorful gesture, keeps to himself, so here's your chance to hear what's on the mind of a retired guy who spends the bulk of his day watching the rest of us rush to and from work.

We're not sure yet whether we're doing a blog or an ezine here, so please indulge us as we take a while to get comfortable with the format. For example, we find it hard to choose between sarcastically commenting on the soft news, earnestly broadcasting the hard news or fretting about whether certain corners of the North Shore qualify as "next neighborhoods" according to the New York Times Magazine definition.

While we figure things out on this end, why don't you take a moment to sample the piping hot content we whipped up just in case somebody stopped by for a visit? In today's issue you'll find Mona Le Roy writing about "Fake Estates" on Staten Island, a cool 1970s-era art project that still lives today. Our resident fitness expert Natasha Spearman-Isip writes about shops worth walking to on the North Shore [with an added GoogleMap thrown in for all you Web 2.0 freax].

And finally, Sam Williams takes a look at the local rock hangout, Dock Street, and interviews Friday night booker/doorman Jeff "Enrage" Altieri.

Enjoy!
